TOPIC INTRODUCTION
The design topic I’ve chosen is Baba Nyonya Fashion. The culture of Baba Nyonya already have more than 600 years of history. There are many kinds of Baba Nyonya traditional costume and all of it were making with hand-sewn. Nyonya traditional clothing combines multi-ethnic cultures, and whether it is cut, pattern, color or fabric, it is extremely delicate and beautiful. In addition, the traditional beaded shoes (Kasut Manek) of Nyonya are also very delicate and need to pay a lot of time to make it, but they are also the most common among the Nyonya people.
REASON
I have some reasons that why I chosen ‘ Baba Nyonya Fashion’ as topic of my assignment. First, Baba Nyonya culture were starting from Melaka, Pulau Pinang and Singapore. But, the most Baba and Nyonya’s place are Melaka. Since I was born, the city I live in is very close to Melaka. So till now I have been to Melaka many times and I knew some of their culture. Baba Nyonya represents the people and cultures of Melaka. Secondly, their costume is very delicate especially the pattern that they sewn on the costume. All of the pattern on the costume is hand-sewn, that isn’t making with any machine, it’s really made me more interest with their culture! So, I would like to combine the pattern of Baba Nyonya fashion with my Digital Typography design.
